Check whether the following are quadratic equations:

x2 + 3x + 1 = (x − 2)2

Given; x2 + 3x + 1 = (x − 2)2

⇒ x2 + 3x + 1 = x2 − 4x + 4


⇒ x2 + 3x + 1 − x2 − 4x − 4 = 0


⇒ −x − 3 = 0


∵ The highest power of x in the equation is 1;


∴ It is not a quadratic equation.
