Q3 of 805 Page 1

A region of a coding DNA strand has the following nucleotide sequence:

– A T G C –

What shall be the nucleotide sequence in (i) sister DNA segment it replicates, and (ii) m-RNA polynucleotide it transcribes?

The basic DNA replication is by semi conservative model, where strand in the double helix acts as a template for the synthesis of a new, complementary strand. Helix structure separates and H bond breaks. Replication produces 2 identical DNA, Each with one new and old strand.

I. - A T G C – (DNA replication) - T A C G –

II. - A T G C – (Transcription) - U A C G –

Transcription is the process where the information in a strand of DNA is copied into a new molecule of messenger RNA. Information from a gene is used to produce outcome such as a protein. One codon (three nucleotides) from the transcribe band represent one amino acid.
