In "The Story of My Life" by Helen Keller, Helen thought that nature was fascinating and terrifying. As a young girl, she found solace and strength in nature. Helen felt that the garden brought her relief from her frustrations by hiding her face in cool leaves and grass. She became familiar with various parts of the garden by smelling the roses, violets, and lilies and by touching the hedges to guide her around. Soon it became a sanctuary where she could forget her disabilities (of sight and sound). Annie Sullivan arrived to educate Helen and began to encourage Helen's love for the outdoors by making her feel that nature was her friend. She remembers her first lessons were taught in the company of nature. Rather than focus on the academic subjects, Helen would concentrate on the beauty and peacefulness of nature in minute detail and its connection with her world. Miss Sullivan taught her the word "water" by touching it and it left a deep impression on her. She even learned about the uncertainty of nature by remembering how she felt fear while climbing a tree. In this way, she seeks learning opportunities from nature and overcomes her fears gradually.

Kate Adams was Helen's mother. She took care of Helen patiently when she became severely ill. Helen remembers her mother's affections when she soothed her pain. Kate was a kind and devoted mother. Helen's well-being was her top priority, so she often stayed up late to comfort her when she was upset and sleepless. Kate encouraged her daughter to learn from her surroundings by making her understand everyday things. Helen's bond with her mother was very deep as she used to envy her little sister for sharing her affections. When Helen recovered from her illness, her disabilities made her extremely restless and short-tempered. Kate, alone focussed on caring for her daughter while the relatives asked that Helen should be isolated from society.
