It was the first time that Pooja was alone at home. Her parents would never leave her alone even for a few hours. But this had been an emergency. Her grandfather had suddenly taken ill and because of her school, Pooja couldn’t leave with them. Pooja’s mother had been very worried while leaving as she had never left her darling daughter alone, but Pooja assured her that she would be fine and it was for just for the night anyway, as in the morning her aunt would come home to her from Pune. Slightly mulled, her parents left her with instructions to not open the door for anyone but her aunt.

Pooja spent the afternoon and evening playing on the computer and then finishing her home work. But when night came, all her courage disappeared. She decided to sleep with the lights on but she couldn’t go to sleep with the lights shining on her face. Annoyed, she switched them off with a huff.

Lying in her bed in the dark, Pooja admitted to herself that the night was getting quite frightening. While tossing and turning on the bed she looked towards the window and her mind started conjuring up all sorts of shapes in the darkness. She tried to console herself by saying that it was just a tree outside and nothing else her heart wouldn’t listen.

Suddenly, she heard a noise in the hall. Pooja was alarmed. She thought of going and seeing from where the noise came from but her limbs seemed to be frozen out of fear. Finall,y she mustered up enough courage to go and investigate. She went into the hall and heard the noise once again. She quickly switched on the light and to her amusement and dismay, it was only her pet dog ‘Simba’ playing in the hall.
