In recent times, the concrete jungles have taken over the natural landscape. In addition, the parks in Kolkata have fallen to decay because of poor maintenance and negligence of government agencies. There is dying vegetation in the form of withered plants, decaying trees, and overgrown weeds. The ground is strewn with fallen leaves and trash bins are filled beyond capacity and littering the ground. Park facilities like swings, benches, and other structures are damaged, rusting, or worn out. This poses a serious threat to young children who can get infections from cuts and bruises by playing on the damaged park facilities. These parks are the only sources of fresh air and greenery but they are being depleted by sheer negligence. The RWAs or Resident Welfare Associations need to join hands and cooperate with the concerned authorities to develop and improve the pathetic condition of Kolkata's parks. School should encourage their students to plant saplings and organize campaigns and rallies to create mass awareness of the importance of preserving the parks. Corporate houses may also volunteer and collect funds to initiate restoration and maintain the parks. We must also join hands to develop greener play areas for children who deserve to grow and play in parks, with more trees, and plants and safer facilities.
